The notarial testament can be “ closed” “cerrado”, giving the notary the last will in a sealed envelope, which is very uncommon, or “open” before a notary, which is the typical testament to be done in Spain.

Both notary and testator can request witnesses but they are not necessary, unless the testator can’t sign for himself, is blind or declares that he or she can not read the testament.

The testament can be written in the testator’s own language and also in the oficial language of the notary. In such a case it will be neccessary for the translator who translated the last will into the language of the notary, to also sign the testament.
